We all have dreams. But as we remember Dr. King’s message 50 years ago in the famous “I Have A Dream” speech, we must go beyond dreaming. We must move to action. My dream is for us to realize we’re not just neighbors. We’re related. My mother always said “change your thinking to change your life”. I would just add to that “and thereby change the world”.
Do some thing. Those must be our watchwords.
We must decide what is our personal calling and “do something!” This is the dream in action. Because we’re all connected, what we do, or don’t do, today affects far more than just ourselves.
My grandmother, in her 90s, couldn’t move from the waist down for most of her latter years. Yet what she did first thing in the morning, every morning, was get on the telephone and call all the senior members of the community. If a person didn’t answer, someone was dispatched immediately to go see about them. Her next mission was to see to it that everybody who needed to get to the doctor or go to the grocery had a ride. I was living in Los Angeles at the time and my major complaint was that I had to make an appointment in order to talk to her in West Virginia. Grandmother’s response was: “Baby, I’ve got things to do.”
We have great measure, each and every one of us. Every kind thought spawns good feeling. Every effort to help somebody, helps us all.
That you woke up today was significant. That we do something from here on in is doubly so. That’s the way we truly honor the legacy of the Rev. Dr. Martin Luther King, Jr.
Enjoyed your presentation in Saint Petersburg.
